Sunbaking on the balmy shores of the Adriatic Sea and swimming in crystal clear water, appreciating the mountainous landscapes and villages, enjoying a few aperol spritzes with old friends, and generally relaxing, Croatia was what we had been dreaming about!
After the final travails exiting Mongolia we arrived back in Russia. Despite essentially being a necessary addition to the route to get us into Kazakhstan, this region of Russia proved to be a highlight.
If we'd made our decision to travel to Iran based on popular advice we would have never visited. Luckily we did visit. It was exciting to "conquer the unknown" and travel across the country that is neither 'East' nor 'West' and experience first-hand the culture, meet the people, see the sights, learn some of the history, and ultimately form our own opinions based on actual experiences. And the experiences were extraordinary.
Where East meets West! Contrary to predictions the experience overall was greatly positive and rewarding and will leave lasting memories of a remarkable part of the world. Read on for more information about the trip
Before we knew it we were back on the tourist trail. We explored the epic Skocjan caves of Slovenia, fanged it on the Autobahn to Salzburg in Austria, camped in the Black Forest of Germany, hung out in Amsterdam, then rode through Belgium and France before crossing the English Channel on the ferry to the UK.
